Junichi Arai (1932-2017), known as “expert of post-industrial age” and “prodigy of Japanese fabric world” is a world-renowned innovator in textile and art master in dyeing and weaving, dedicating his lifetime to textile design. Since 1970s, Junichi Arai has devoted himself to design and study digital jacquard fabric and has created a multitude of fabrics of oriental style with both artistic and practical value. His works are of unparalleled appeal in the perfect combination of traditional craft and modern technology in fabric dyeing. Cooperated with Issey Miyake and Rei Kawakubo, Junichi Arai brought innovative cloth into fashion design, not only created quite a stir in the fashion world but also brought about a new generation of design and innovation.

The exhibition will demonstrate the glamorous design work by Junichi Arai, the textile created by combining traditional craft, modern technology and oriental aesthetics. It reviews his design course over two centuries, intensively demonstrating Junichi Arai’s unique artistic and design ideals with several forms such as textile and clothing. Junichi Arai sheds new light on textile art design from his unique perspective in the hope of providing possibilities for exploring innovation in future clothing and textile art. This exhibition provides an excellent opportunity to explore possibilities in textile design, and the theme “Self-Organisation" truly reflects the innovative artistic approaches toward traditional textile weaving techniques, which will be fully explored in the future.
