Introduction | 展覽介紹

A new concept termed ‘New Luxury’ has emerged from a social change whereby a growing percentage of the population now consumes luxury products based on emotional needs. Silverstein and Fiske (2005) define ‘New Luxury’ as products and services that possess higher levels of quality, taste, and aspiration than other goods in the category but are not so expensive as to be out of reach. Although the concept of ‘New Luxury’ is well received and has been embraced by most fashion retailers and brands, Twitchell (2003) questioned whether ‘New Luxury’ could still be categorised as luxury if everyone can afford it. It is because luxury goods get value not from production as much as from consumption. In other words, who is buying the luxury goods becomes much more important than how it is made. Therefore, this exhibition/installation revisits and interprets the meaning of ‘Luxury’ and ‘New Luxury’.


隨著社會對衝量奢侈品需求轉變為以情感出發點,一個嶄新的概念「新奢侈品」因而洐生。 Silverstein and Fiske 於2005年定義「新奢侈品」為有高級品質 、品味與渴望而又不是遙不可及的昂貴商品和服務。即使這個新概念已經被廣泛時裝品牌及零售商所接納,但Twitchell在2003年卻就人人能負担得起的「新奢侈品」是否能被分類為「奢侈品」而提出質疑。在衝量「奢侈品」的價值上消費者的質素遠比製造質素重要嗎 ?「是次展覽將重新探討及演譯「奢侈品」與「新奢侈品」。
